Jewish Culture in Trastevere
Trastevere, one of Rome's most picturesque neighbourhoods, has a rich tapestry of history, with a significant Jewish presence that dates back to antiquity. Although the Jewish community is more famously associated with the Jewish Ghetto across the river, its historical and cultural influence extends into Trastevere as well.
Jewish residents began to settle in Rome over 2,000 years ago, and Trastevere, with its proximity to the Tiber River, became one of the areas where Jews first lived. Through the centuries, despite facing periods of segregation and discrimination, such as being confined to the Jewish Ghetto during the Renaissance, the Jewish community has contributed significantly to the cultural and social fabric of Trastevere.
